Controllers of the Eight Directions

East
The demigod of the east is Indra, the king of heaven, who bestows royal and religious qualities and stimulates creative and positive thinking.

Southeast
The demigod of the southeast is Agni the demigod who controls fire, and governs knowledge, judgement, and discrimination. He is responsible for the energy and the qualities of the energy field of a building and its inhabitants.

South
The governing demigod for the south is Yamaraja, the upholder of dharma (virtue). He is also known as the god of death who is the final judge of all our deeds in life.

Southwest
Nirriti the Lord of the demons and Pitri the Lord of the ancestors rule the southwest. A man’s fate and lifespan mainly depends on the design and furnishing of this direction. The southwest is the home of negative influences and evil spirits. Therefore Vastu recommends keeping this direction as closed and weighted down as possible in order to prevent those influences. It is not a place for auspicious activities.

West
The demigod of the west is Varuna, the director of water in the planetary systems, who is compassionate and giving. One who desires a good bank balance should worship the demigod Varuna.

Northwest
The demigod of the northwest is Vayu, the god of the wind, and governs the mind, emotions and moods. In the Mahabharata it is stated that Vayu is the messenger of the demigods.

North
The demigod Kuvera, the treasurer of the demigods, governs the North and embodies wealth and prosperity.

Northeast
The controller of the northeast is God himself, otherwise known as Ishan or Lord Vishnu, who is the giver of spirituality and fortune. He is the controller of all other rulers.
