The Influence of Planets in Your House

Enhance the Harmony of Your Living Space

Influential Planets in Earth’s Sphere

Knowing the specific influences of certain planets upon the eight directional areas of your home and office, and then positioning different room functions accordingly, greatly enhances the harmony of the living space in your
home (see diagram).

The Vedas combine the importance of material and spiritual knowledge. The science of Vastu, Vedic architecture, is therefore both a material and spiritual science with immense spiritual and material benefits.

The following are some basic guidelines:

The Sun

The Ruler of the East

The Sun planet’s auspicious influences are strongest in the east of your home. Rooms in the east or northeast are good for prayer, worship, and meditation. Respecting the Sun planet in this way is auspicious since the Vedas state that by worshipping the Sun one becomes blessed with good health.

The sun represents light and truth. It is the origin of all other planets and therefore represents the self of the whole universe. It stands for cosmic intelligence and pure consciousness. In the house it is mainly connected to the east and the flow of the solar pranas from the east.

Venus

The Ruler of the Southeast

Venus lies to the southeast of your home. With good Vastu in the southeast, Venus enhances fine speech and benefits sofas, living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and women, with auspiciousness.

Venus is known as the Goddess of love and beauty. In the same way Venus manifests the female aspect of life, it represents our sense of harmony, passion and enjoyment. On the lower level, Venus stands for sexuality, wealth and beauty, while on a higher level it represents the devotion to truth.

Mars

The Ruler of the South

Mars lies to the south of your home. Although Mars has some very inauspicious influences, Mars can give tremendous strength and wealth, depending upon your personal horoscope. Wealth from Mars comes to those with a well placed southeast kitchen as well as a correctly positioned chimney and fire-place. Vastu defects in the south invite various losses and problems, but good Vastu in the south inspires religiosity, justice, strong discipline, and power.

The planet Mars represents the active emotional and vital projections of the self towards the outside world. Thus it represents energies hidden in matter, however trying to manifest themselves in matter. The negative aspect of Mars entails chaotic and destructive forces. Just like the sun and the moon embody the polarity of the sexes on a higher platform, Mars and Venus represent this polarity on the sexual level. Mars is the active male pole personifying strength, courage and enthusiasm. Without its influence, no interest, no passion and no determination will ever develop. Mars is the planet of deed, clearly directed towards a goal.

Rahu

The Ruler of the Southwest

Although the planets Rahu and Ketu are not known in Western astrology they play an important role in Vedic astrology. Ketu’s auspicious influence comes to your office or home from the northeast and Rahu’s inauspicious influence from the southwest. Thus good Vastu in the northeast is to have lowered and open land, and good Vastu in the southwest is to have those inside and outside areas raised and blocked. With good Vastu their combined influence provides a protective influence all around your home.

In western astrology Rahu is not known as a planet, but as the northern lunar node, i.e. the point of intersection between the ecliptic and the orbit of the moon. According to Vedic understanding Rahu is a subtle planet with a clearly felt influence on the lives of people. Rahu is always located on the opposite side of Ketu, the southern lunar node. Therefore, Rahu and Ketu rule the opposite directions of the diagonal northeast (Ketu) and southwest (Rahu).

Among the nine planets Rahu is considered to be the most vicious one. His influence is mainly felt on the psychological plane. In many ways, he is very similar to Saturn, however, in comparison, he acts more on the subtle plane. As subtle planets, both Rahu and Ketu adopt the qualities of those planets they are combined with.

Saturn

The Ruler of the West

Saturn lies to the west of your home. Through a main entrance in the west, Saturn influences inauspicious circumstances such as divorce, depression, uncontrollable sexuality, and general delays. On the positive side, if you have good Vastu in the west, i.e. the west is more closed than open, Saturn engenders auspicious qualities such as popularity, scholarship, happiness, and good eating. In a building with good Vastu, Saturn bestows auspiciousness on the store rooms, eating and hunger, the garbage area, and the energy flow between front and back entrances.

Saturn is considered to be the most vicious among the main planets, if he is manifesting his negative aspects, while his positive aspect is of great importance to spiritual life especially. It bestows one with discipline, renunciation and fosters solitude and asceticism. His dark side entails death, disease, poverty, separation and perversion. It can be felt anywhere where things degenerate, are being destroyed, or lose their power. It confronts man with suffering and pessimism.

Equipped with such qualities, Saturn represents time especially, which after all will dissolve all things created and will bring them closer to their natural ending or death. A strong Saturn is the basis for everything, which should last in this world. A weakened Saturn will lead to delays in many areas.

The Moon

The Ruler of the Northwest

The moon planet’s influence is strongest in the northwest. If you have good Vastu in the northwest, your fame and honour are increased, and your relationships are benefited.

The moon represents the female principle in the universe and therefore forms the polar opposite of the sun. The sun represents the self of the cosmos and the moon its spirit. The polarity of the sun and the moon can also be found in love and willpower, activity and passivity, mind and body etc. The moon influences mainly the emotional and mental well-being of man and also affects his intellectual capabilities. If the moon is in a good position, flexibility and adaptability are prominent, while a debilitated moon may lead to moody behaviour, unsteadiness and unreliability.

Mercury

The Ruler of the North

Mercury lies to the north of your home. With good Vastu in the north, Mercury fosters study, business, communication, and good character. Mercury also rules areas that function as the entrance hall, green areas, a veranda, and office.

As the messenger of the Gods Mercury represents communication, movement and intelligence. It stands for cleverness, eloquence, travelling, logic and the ability to learn and understand. Its position in a horoscope or in a house of a person indicates his intellectual and spiritual development in life.

Jupiter

The Ruler of the Northeast

Jupiter lies to the northeast of your home. With good Vastu in the northeast, Jupiter strengthens character, awards respect, influences the room containing one’s most valuable possessions, favours a children’s bedroom in the northeast, and nurtures spiritual development.

Planet Jupiter is the most magnanimous and helpful among the planets. It represents all areas of life in which we grow and learn. Jupiter also embodies all the mercy we receive in life. At the same time, it represents law and order both externally and internally. By its influence the good in life will reach us.

Ketu

The Ruler of the Northeast

Although the planets Rahu and Ketu are not known in Western astrology. they play an important role in Vedic astrology.

In western astrology Ketu corresponds to the southern lunar node. Together with Jupiter it rules the northeast, however it only has a subordinate role in comparison to Jupiter. While Rahu points out the susceptibility of the individual to the influence of the mass, Ketu indicates how the individual moves in his own narrow circles and isolates himself.
